Please Read: Ford Attacks the Little Guy!!!

QUESTION:

Ford is trying to shut down one of my favorite sites for older Volvos.

Basically, Ford is claiming that ClassicVolvo is guilty of "cyber-piracy". ClassicVolvo has been online longer than Ford has owned Volvo. ClassicVolvo has been a real help to me in locating parts for my older Volvos. Like many of us, his business is based on his love for Volvos.

I really don't understand Ford's thinking. They didn't buy the exclusive right to the Volvo name anyway. There are still Volvo Trucks and Volvo construction equipment. I also believe there is a Volvo jet engine. Are they now going to try to stop them too? I think not! They will just attack the little guys out there. Well, I for one, will never buy a new Ford or Volvo as long as Ford is trying to do this.

if there is anything you can do to get the word out, I would really appreciate it. I have no connection with Classic Volvo. I've just been a very satisfied customer. The owner, Hans Rekestad has been a great guy to deal with.

ANSWER:

I don't believe Ford would win in court. They're trying to use their size and bullying power to scare folks into complying with their wishes.

McDonald's Corp. tried something similar a number of years back. They basically wanted to sue anyone who put a "Mc" in front of any word
(they lost).

This case is certainly different but still represents bullying. If this web site were posing as an authorized Volvo dealer or were selling Yugos or something under the Volvo name, sure that's trademark infringment.

Do you think the "Julia Roberts Fan Club" web site is in danger of being sued by J.R. for unlawful use of her intellectual property? This site is a "Volvo Fan Club" site. I think they're on solid legal ground.
