Shaper value? Should I buy it? HELP!
QUESTION:I've got the option to buy a floor model Shaper that seems to have been built
in the late '40's or '50's. It looks to be a 12" made by _____ & Smith or Smith
& ____ (can't remember the other name offhand).
It is BEAUTIFUL! You could almost eat off it, very little wear on the ways,
original paint is near perfect, no damage what-so-ever. It used to run off a
lineshaft but has been converted to run with an electric motor.
Now the big IF. I can get it for $1000, am I crazy? Is it worth it?
The 2nd question is how to move the thing!!!
Or should I just run?
ANSWER: I bought my German 16" (1950) shaper for $200. It was all there except
for
motor and friction drive pulley which I made. I found the mfr on the
internet, wrote them for operation and parts manuals and had them for
free within 2 weeks!
I also would ask you how badly you want the shaper before paying out
that
much money. If you want THAT one, I'd take copies of all these posts
back to the seller and offer about $300. There are PLENTY of good
shapers around for that money.
On the subject of moving it: My old Case Diesel farm tractor's front
end loader can handle about 2000 pounds. If there is any access to a
tractor such as this at both ends, rent a "skid steer loader" trailer.
