Can someone offer advice on buying used backhoe?
QUESTION:I'm looking to buy a used backhoe. I'd like to use it for general
earthmoving chores around the ranch, and would like to plow snow with it.
- Is there an age beyond which I'd expect to have problems? What is the
life of a backhoe?
- Can you plow snow with a backhoe? Do you need a 4x4 for this or is 2
wheel drive sufficient?
- How do I go about buying one without getting ripped off? Is there a
Kelly blue book for these?
- What do I need to know about owning one of these before I buy?
ANSWER: a backhoe to plow snow, must get some serious storms up where you are.
I live in Maine and after looking at backhoes for awhile I gave up since
just about everything I looked at had a million hours on it and was ready
for a major rebuild. You sound alot like I was...green. Not too smart
buying a backhoe if you don't know what you are doing. I ended up buying a
brand new John Deere tractor with front end loader and backhoe for 31K with
two year factory warranty. Used it to put in a foundation, clear some
woods, dig a septic system and a lot more. It cannot do the work a yellow
machine can, but I don't have to worry about dropping 10K into a rebuild
anytime soon either. You can get a decent JD310 backhoe 4wd for about what
I paid, maybe a little less. Resale on these things is pretty high,
depending on where you are.
