cast iron welding

QUESTION:

after several attempts to fix this, im about to give up. ive got a 30y/o backhoe (jd400) that has a couple broken areas on the main arm. i also have an old, but very good, miller 300 tig. in addition, ive got a $200 stick welder. what combonation of the above listed pieces of equipment and additional purchased parts will result in a weld that wont pop when im trying to dig a ditch? btw, a new arm for the backhoe is not an acceptable answer, nor is using the welding equipment to burn a ditch into the ground - my leads arent long enough!

ANSWER:

I have used a Certanium cast rod for cast welding before with good results. Are you absolutley sure that it is cast? If not sure, call John Deere and have them let you know what material it is made from. Now a days, most backhoe parts are usually weldable with a low hydrogen rod. If so, you need to grind a V into the crack area or bevel the two pieces if broken in half and shine the immediate area. Do a little preheat and tack it together, then doing only about 1" welds, weld from each side. After these small welds, use a chipping hammer or something similar and peen the weld until cool, not just the weld, but the surrounding area as well until it is cool enough to lay your hand on it, then proceed to the next section. This is the method I have used and have had success with it. Once finished, I wrapped it in old rags, etc to let it cool as slowly as possible. Hope this helps alittle bit for you.
