home-made forklift advice

QUESTION:

I plan to build forklift/extendable boom crane, similar to those built by JCB. I have a s-10 4x4 pickup and s10 4x4 blazer that I intend to use for pwer and trans. What I need to know is there a reason I cannot use the front wheel drive off both turning one around to use as rear axle allowing 4 wheel steer? Only problem I see is not being able to unlock one wheelon each axle for turning. Anyone ever done anything like this?

ANSWER:

My dad and I run a crane service. He has a 10 ton national crane mounted on a GMC truck. The 10 ton does relate to the amount the crane is rated at but we never even think about picking up the full 10 tons. We usually stop at the half way mark and that is if we can get close enough to the object that we are picking up. The strongest point of the crane is when the crane is straight up with nothing extended, but with the crane straight up the hook is over the bed of the truck so it isn't practical to pick up anything that way. Anything over 5000 pounds we put on a double load line. We make a good living running over town doing, what my dad calls, fast quick lifts. I have the idea that you are trying to build a small boom for a truck that can handle
2000 - 3000 pounds max. Is it right? Our crane weights about 30,000 lbs that is to keep the truck on the ground.
