Looking for a toy forklift

QUESTION:

Our toddler son is heavily into all sorts of construction vehicles. He's got lots to play with, but what he's asking for now is a forklift. He wants one baaaaaaddddd! We took him to Toys R Us last weekend specifically to find one, hopefully inexpensive (a dangerous mission, actually).

Well, we didn't find any, and had to settle for two Hot Wheels, an excavator and a ladder fire truck that he calls a "cherry picker." Those are fun in the dirt (sorry, collectors!), but we really need to find a fork lift someday. It doesn't have to be a Hot Wheel sort of diecast car, though that would be easy on the wallet.

I did some hunting around on the net this morning through Hot Wheel and Matchbox collectors' web pages. From that I know of several fork lifts from past years, but don't have access to a list of the current year's crop of toys. Still, it seems like this shouldn't be too hard to find. These are the older models I found:

1168 CAT Forklift (1980) 1168 Cat Fork Lift (1984) 1168 CAT Forklift (1985) 1168 Fork Lift (1990)

ANSWER:

Another little forklift enthusiast! Miles *loves* the things! We visit the garden center near his day care several times a week so he can see their forklift in action. He never tires of it. Right now he's using his Spiderman car he got in a Happy Meal and calls that his forklift (there's a little spider web thing on the front that flips down--it does kinda look like one if you use your imagination

I have *no* idea where to find a toy forklift, it never even occured to me that such a thing was obtainable

You might try a company that actually sells forklifts. When my Father-in-law bought a Toyota forklift they gave him a diecast model (about 1:24 I think) that was made in Japan by a company I had never heard of.

Another source that is especially nice for children about 3 and up is LEGO. My daughter has a forklift that came with a lego set. I don't think that you can buy one separate, but they are available in several sets. They are fairly small though which is why I don't recommend them for kids less than about 3.
