QUESTION:That dream died in the 70's when it was finally determined that most boys DON'T
like to play with dolls anymore than most girls want to play with toy trucks
and construction equipment.
ANSWER: You don't seem to get it.
The point is NOT to expect every child to want to play with both trucks
and dolls.
The point is to treat each child as an individual, and to respect their
OWN preferences, regardless of gender.
And that means if a boy DOES want to play with dolls, to respect THAT
choice, and to stop assuming that just because he's a boy, he will NOT
want to play with dolls.
My dream has not died -- and that dream is that our children will be
respected as individuals, and treated according to their age, their
development, and that their preferences be respected. If you have a boy
who loves trucks, you buy him trucks. If you have a boy who likes
dolls, you buy him dolls. You have some of everything around, so each
child has a chance to express their preference, and also because even
kids that prefer trucks have the occassional desire to play with dolls.
You don't pick things based on gender, but on what each child prefers.
