FS: 2001 Taylor jumbo 815-ce
QUESTION:This is a special order 815, has the traditionl Florentine (sharp-full
access) cutaway, as opposed to the 2001 standard with venetian (soft)
cutaway, which limits access to the higher frets.
It has an absolutely beautiful indian rosewood 3-pc back, rosewood
sides, sitka spruce top, mahogany neck, fishman blender. My friends
think I'm nuts, but I'm a dread guy and selling it to get a rosewood
dread. This guitar is only 2 mos old, and tone is HUGE, with plenty of
definition on top. The Taylor jumbo has an oversized lower bout and
small upper bout which makes it very present/defined across the
spectrum. OHSC taylor built case included.
I got it at dealers cost... (long story involving a make-up deal for a
store mistakenly selling a limited edition dread they had commited to
selling me) and I won't make any money off it... but I just want a
dreadnaught and to step up slightly to a langejans custom, so 2500 plus
buyer pays shipping will cover it.
ANSWER: I probably should have said "near dealers cost." My understanding was
their cost was 2175 plus 200 upcharge for the florentine. I don't know
if the 3-pc back made a difference... I didn't ask.
When the manager made a little squeak, I told them "add fifty", as I
don't believe in driving down the price to "bitter bones"... I'd just as
soon pay a little more to a local outfit and assure somebody keeps the
big guys honest. So I got it for 2425, plus sales tax, (over 200 more)
and I'll be happy to show any perspective buyer reciepts. I didn't ask
to see the factory invoice and assumed the store to be telling the
truth.
Also, to my understanding, with Taylors "new 2001" neck to body joint
design, they are considering even a larger upcharge... they said the rep
told them it's a lot tougher to do florentine... hence the change. I'm
not "inside" with anyone from Taylor, so I guess Im at their mercy.
Even after tax I got mine for considerably less than a close friend got
his "on special sale" at GC, before tax... and be sure I'm not
mis-representing, the reciepts show I'm losing a coupla hundred to sell
it. Pardon me though, if I mislead anyone... it was unintentional and
unknowingly.
Gotta have a dreadnaught...
PS - off topic. in fairness to the dealer... in my opinion, factory
invoice is NOT dealers cost to any business who wants to stay in
business... there are other costs just to break even... sometimes these
include shipping... labor to invoice... receiving... bookeeping charges,
phone bills on custom orders. If these tota1 2 hours, (how easy?), how
much?
As a side business, (that in recent years does fairly well), I do Live
SR and audio system consulting/installations, mostly for non-profit
functions and churches. Regardless of what my charge is everybody
ALWAYS wants it for "less" if they can get it... if I do everything for
exact transaction cost, who's going to pay for my phone, my pager, my
trailer (dedicated to the business) licensing, my B&O tax? Who's gonna
pay for the new gear at the next gig that needs the extra set of
speakers in the remote area over by the...
Not to make excuses... as I desire to be very honest and transparent...
but dealers cost and factory invoice are not the same to me... ask a
manager at GC or any retail business... except maybe car lots... go
figure.
Besides GAS, I also suffer from FAS (Forklift Acquisition Syndrome),
I'm pallet retentive, and I hear
backup alarms in my sleep. I can't
walk through home depot and see a
pallet jack raised, sitting on it's
hydraulics, without reaching over
and releasing the pressure (it's
bad for the hydro cylinders).
My wife is a cashier trainer. If the
cashier doesn't know some code or how
do do something on the POS terminal,
Mrs Lumpy can usually fix it, even
if it's not one of our stores.
