People Using Starter Motors

QUESTION:

I trialed some Delcos from Transit vans last year - using skid steer the one running "Backwards" was *always* slower, resulting in an arc instead of a straight line. Add to this, they barely had enough power to skid steer tracks so I went up to coach wiper motors before settling on wheelchair units
(which weren't much better!)

From my experience, if you're building a heavyweight wheelchair motors are at the limit of acceptable - wiper motors are not up to it.

ANSWER:

I don't think that the size of vehicle is proportional to the wiper motor size.. coaches will often use two car motors (one for each blade) and because they hang down, they don't need as much power.

If you were looking in a vehicle made less than 20 years ago, chances are you have a small motor. I think that manufacturers decided they could get away with less power after then. Delco has made many sizes of wiper motor over the years.

perhaps getting a matching pair isn't such a good idea if you don't know how to match up the motor speeds... you don't need to drive the wheels directly. As for tracks, I wouldn't bother using wiper motors... if you can afford the tracks, you can afford decent motors. I was just thinking... Could you charge a capacitor to turn your starter motor if you were using it to, say, activate a pickaxe style weapon?

I'd say that you'd need a bank of capacitors, and I don't know how you would deal with the non linear nature of capacitor output.

I'll get out my university electronics books....

You could always "accidentally" cause your capacitors to explode at a critical moment.
