QUESTION:This group has always been great for info and information exchange:
everything from how-to to beatuing up on Toshiba. I have a problem and
would like some advice (boy, is that an opening}. I ahve a business
that designs and manufactures automatic machinery. We have made stuff
from a computer controlled press for making diamond core drills to fully
remote controlled Case 721 front end loaders. I have a bunch of stuff
left over from these projects. Much of the stuff is brand new in
original boxes with original manufacturers documentation. This stuff is
surplus and we don't need to sell it at top price since it has been
partly paid for by the projects we do. I hatge to give it away and I
have been doing just that on ebay. I have had accumulators, directional
control vlaves, heat exchangers and all kids of other stuff. I
currently have some of it listed.
For example: I have an accumulator for sale on ebay and the item is
closing shortly and all that has been bid on it is $1.75. I didn't put
a reserve on it becuase I need the room and I need to get it out of here
but you have to agree that $1.75 for an accumulator is ridiculous.
Likewise I have an air to oil heat exchanger and all that has been bid
on it $31.00. This is all gerat stuff. I have tried the newspaper and
have had no response at all. I would think that the internet would be a
better place to be able to get to the people who use some of this
stuff. Here is the question: anyone have any ideas where we could sell
some of this stuff to people who know what they are buying?
ANSWER: Probably there is a better way, but I'm no expert. I think I would
have called the original OEMs and asked about returning the item(s),
even for a heavy restocking penalty. If it's actually directly from a
manufacturer, they probably won't want it, but maybe you could find
one of their dealer/distributors. How about faxing the people you
made and supplied the equipment for and offering them a deal on 'spare
parts'? I can't imagine a use for myself of an accumulator, and when
was the last time YOU bought one on e-bay, or from the newspaper? Air -oil heat exchanger? Pretty esoteric stuff. But I bet your old
customers have wondered. Have you called any heavy equipment repair
guys? Ad in "HEAVY EQUIPMENT magazine? Somebody like surplus sales
places (Princess Auto Supply in Winnipeg, Manitoba)? Local scrap
dealers here pay about $0.40 per pound for clean scrap steel. How
about gathering it all together, throw in some other old interesting
stuff and having an industrial garage sale some Saturday morning?
Toss in the old drill press or impact gun, or....., or.....,, and get
enough to buy a new one of them! Hell, I usually buy SOMETHING at
these sales if it looks like its cheap, or even just interesting, but
I've got to SEE it!! By the way, would you take $40 for the
accumulator, you ship it?
Next time, maybe you should make a note of the e-bay address of the
items in your "request for assistance" piece. I'd have gone for a
look. Probably would have bid 50.00 for all of them. Welllllll,
maybe!
