Sumitomo Excavator

QUESTION:

The mustang needs new tires again, so its time to search through tire-rack. Having a bad-weather car now means I can get summer tires for it. But looking through I find the Sumitomo HTR+s.

Are the Sumitomo HTR+ tires as good as the tire rack ratings lead one to believe? They have better ratings than many summer tires. Hard to believe for an 'all season'. Not to mention the Continental ContiExtremeContact got similiar marks.

ANSWER:

Yes, the HTR+ are very good, although they don't quite live up to their reviews. The HTR ZII is the better summer tire, though, and a buck cheaper. That said, the best summer tire of the bunch you've listed in the ES100, according to everything I've heard.

Others;

Falken Azenis RS, $108 each from onlinetires.com in that size. Just about the stickiest street tires available.

At the <$175 price point, you can get a tremendous amount of summer tire. Kumho MX for $125, Yokohama AVS Sport for $145, BFG KDW or KDWS, and Pirelli P7000 for $130 are all a notch above the tires you listed.

As much as I love Kumho, I have to say that I'd avoid both the 711 and 712, especially compared to the others listed. I have MXs on the Subaru now, and they are about a light-year better than the cheap Kumhos.
