brush mower for 3-point hitch
QUESTION:is there equipment like the DR field & brush mower which would mount
on a 3 point (Massey-Ferguson 240) hitch or side mount. Anything boom
mounted seems to require much heavier tractor or is a dedicated unit
such as a skid steer. I need to come up with a way to clear along
fence rows and cut back areas of heavy undergrowth adjacent to cedar
trees along a runway.
ANSWER: What you are looking for is commonly called a "brush hog" after one of
the more popular manufacturers. But lots of companies make them. They go
on the 3pt hitch and hang off the back. There is a wheel at the back of
the brush hog to let it follow the terrain, and it can pivot up and down
on the lower 3ph mounts. The business end (underneath) has two or more
big steel blades that pivot. They're driven by a PTO shaft and a gearbox.
The blades spin at high speed and pummel the bejesus out of anything
that they can't cut clean through.
Brush hogs generally start at 4' across and go up from there. Smaller
is easier to handle and turn around, larger does more area at a time.
I ordered a 3.5' brush hog specially for my tiny Kubota 7100 and even
this little brush hog will turn a 2x4 into splinters faster than you
can push in the PTO clutch. (I didn't test this on purpose, the 2x4
was lurking in the grass).
As far as I can tell DR used the same idea for their mower, only its
self-propelled and with only a 16hp gas engine its not going to be as
powerful even as my little Kubota diesel. If you already have a tractor
and can drive it on the area you want to mow, a real tractor-mounted
brush hog is the way to go.
