Skid Steer Loader recommendations

QUESTION:

I wanted to solicit opinions from those that are experienced with skid loaders. I want to buy one in the 50 to 70 hp range. I have looked at Case, John Deere, Gehl, and Bobcat. I have test driven all or rented them in the past. All seem to be made durably and ready to withstand rugged use. I am leaning toward the Gehl, I think mainly because I think the local dealer would be the easiest to deal with and the most accomodating. I would like any insights or observations on any of these machines or other skid loaders anyone wants to recommend pro or con.

ANSWER:

I own a 1998 5635 SXT Gehl skid loader. I am very very very happy with it. We have had only one problem with the unit. The hydraulic pump or pump for the steering were going out. They were replaced under warranty. When we got it back it steered better then new. They said they changed manufactures of the pumps since. My advice if buying a Gehl:

If using it for dirt work-making swails, backfilling get a turbo 80 horses Get the "standard" attachment system-we have the Gehl system but we have an adapter plate however, not all "standard" attachments will work with the plate. Finance through Gehl finance- we have 5.9% for 4 years with 20 % down but, they run specials around this time of year ask your dealer Upgrade the tires from stock-the upgrade tires will last much longer and give you a better ride If using machine for dirt work order a bolt on tooth bar for the bucket-it works wonders Maintainance is limited-change oil every 500 hours If lifting heavy loads-clay soil or soild block get the 500 pound counter weight
