Battery Question? 24volts no myth here

QUESTION:

I have a skidsteer (case) loader that is 24v I use 2 12v batteries connected in a series my problem seems to be that the batteries only last about 2 years. They show 24v on the voltage meter but don't seem to have the power to crank it. The engine is a 158 cu in diesel about 60 hp so not large by diesel standards. The eye in the batteries are green but several turns on the engine and they are low. I did use 2 car batteries but these failed, so I bought 2 large deep cycle marine batteries now 2 years later these are doing the same thing. Is there a problem using these in a series. I just cant figure why the short life. Any light on this problem would help

ANSWER:

The batteries on our farm tractors only lasted two years back when I was kid on the farm. The main reason we were told (by the guy at the auto-electric where we bought replacement batteries) was that the vibration of the tractor killed them. It would cause the plates to flake and eventually short out one or more cells.

The skid steer probably has a frame mounted battery housing near the engine, and the engine probably has plenty of vibration. I suspect that unless you vibration isolate your battery trays from the frame, there isn't a battery that will last noticeably longer in your application.

This machine has a lot of vibration and bounces around a lot. The batteries are in the front under the floor boards I have them setting on micarta 1/4 in plates better than the steel and bolted solid, covered with rubber, lot of dirt and grease the trany is only 4 in from them. The engine is in the back and when at low speed vibrates a lot. I have to weld up brackets that hold things often. The engine is not original it had a smaller case gas engine 43 hp gas now has 62 hp Komatsu diesel same as the T22 cat, about the same as 350 JD Cat. The alt is a solid state regulator in the unit and had been checked by Industrial Starter Gen. shop and seems to be ok. It does set in the winter idle as it is to wet here to use then usually about 2 months with little use. Mainly I use it for a fork lift on the rough & soft ground but dig dirt with too.

I heard that a constant current battery charger will desulfate a battery where the standard chargers wont knock the sulfate off the plates. Anybody know anything about that.

I really get tired of buying batteries for this machine all the time. If I could figure just what is giving me the problems I would fix it. Have seen a lot of good points here and will check them all out. I going to get this thing fixed even if its going to kill me or it.
