Wheelbase and Fifth Wheels
QUESTION:I tow a 24 1/2' fifth with a short box conventional cab GMC. I have
never felt the need for a longer wheelbase with regard to either
wandering or stability. I feel much more secure than when I had a long
box supercab with a camper on back. I think the improved maneuverability
more than compensates for any improvement in ride that a longer
wheelbase might bring.(IMHO, of course)
ANSWER: we towed the same trailer with two different vehicles:
one an extended-cab dually, the other a conventional-cab 4x4.
The dually was the odds-on better truck for towing, and it is my
impression that part of the advantage was the longer wheelbase.
If for no other reason than that fact that any given movement (up, down or sideways) on either end has less influence on
directional stability.
While thinking of extremes doesn't always provide the right
answer, ask yourself if you'd prefer towing with a crew cab
dually - - -or a small Bobcat*! 8-)
And it is worth noting that over-the-road truck drivers ALWAYS
opt for the longest legal wheelbase they can get by with on the
tractor. Those who drive COE rigs do so largely because they
must comply with politically-established length rules. IMO.

* For those who don't know, a Bobcat is a VERY short-wheelbase
skid-steer loader often seen handling bulk materials with a
bucket. The wheelbase is shorter than the tread width.
