QUESTION:Chain link is not my first choice, although it is more dog proof, and will
last longer than most any other fence material.
Cedar is my favorite, as far as appearance, but the dogs may chew it up.
Also I have replaced about 1/2 of the cedar fence at my home that was about
12 years old. The 4x4 cedar posts rotted off! I replaced my cedar with green
treated. I used 4x6 .6 retention treated posts set in pea gravel. Everything
else is .4 retention treated. I am hoping to get a few more years out of
this one. The green preservative fades over time and you can stain it after
the fence dries out, say the next year.
Setting the posts is not that hard, just rent a power auger to dig them.
ANSWER: there's a lot about wooden privacy fences
that I like -- especially the privacy
but we're going with
chain link. Eventually we may not need the fence anymore, and think it
may be easier to remove chain link.
We rented a power auger with an 8 inch bit, and it worked well -- for
the first 8 - 12 inches. Then we hit clay, and it wouldn't dig any
deeper. We tried spading, but it was almost like hitting rock.
Short of hiring someone to come in, the next step is a mystery. The
lumber yard said the posts had to be set two feet deep, which is going
to be difficult given the incredibly hard soil.
Your auger must have been a poor one! I augured through clay when I replaced
my fence. 10" auger, bored right through it. It may help to water the hole
down good to soften the clay some. Hose it good, and auger it the rest of
the way the next day. You may be able to rent a skid steer with an auger
too. Defiantly would take care of your back!
