QUESTION:I have an oppurtunity to purchase a truck mount back hoe which I
haven't seen yet and was wondering how to tell how deep it can dig. Do
you measure the length of booms or what? What other things might be
wise to check on it?
All I know is it was on the back of a Canadian National Railway Truck
at this point and it was made in Buffalo.
I want to make it into a caddigger type unit so it will be very
portable as I want to use it at our lake lot and acreage which are
3hrs from each other..
ANSWER: The valves, pins, bushings, cylinder seals and rods, and
hoses. The boom and dipper should not have been bent or
dented anyplace. None of them are really expensive by
themselves, but if they all need replacement or are worn
out, it can be quite expensive. You will need a power plant
to run it.
My little excavator digs just five feet deep at the tip of
its swing with the boom all the way down. Its most useful
at 4' and less.
To figure out what it will do, you need to take a look at
and measure the length of the arms between the pivot points
and do some scale drawing. Go to a backhoe or excavator
dealer and take a look at the charts they supply to show the
digging limits of the equipment - that will show you more in
five minutes than I can type in two evenings.
The pins and bushings can be replaced. You can make pins
and bushings if you have to. I will be making new pins for
mine - they are $100.00 each from the dealer. I suspect
they need to be case hardened. They are 25mm diameter which
means they need to be either fully machined or I need to
find some nice 25mm precision ground shafting or drill rod.
