QUESTION:How's the battle with the Missouri AG going? Makin any progress?
With regard to cylinder anodizing, it's ok as long as you do the cylinders in
purple and the pistons in blue. Navy Blue. Seems there's some difference in
aura, ah, or hardness between colors. You know, like chrome rings and
cylinders in airplane engines, it just takes the right combination an yer all
set. Speaking of chrome rings, they're a bad idea against an anodized
cylinder(especialy a purple one) just as they are a bad idea against a chrome
airplane cylinder. Of course if you had the piston cylinder clearance just
right you could leave the rings off altogether, then you wouldn't have to worry
about them gouging and scraping those nice anodized cylinder walls. purple
ones are especially the nicest.
I didn't realize you were a motorhead Ken. How many engines have you built?
Hey I almost forgot, isn't there a steel sleeve in those aluminum cylinders?
Ah tink so bubba. So let me get this straight, you anodize the jug and then
stuff the sleeve in, is that right? Ah sure, I get it! Next time yuu doo dat,
video tape it will ya? I wanna see.
I'll not speculate as to the accuracy of your *theory* about the benefits or
lack thereof of lightweight pistons. I am really curious as to what makes you
think the crankshaft would need rebalancing though. Come on Kenny, lay it on
dude!
ANSWER: Rotax engines have steel sleeves. The Hirth engines don't. The Hirth
cylinder is bored out of a block of aluminum. The aluminum carries away the
heat better in a block than the steel sleeve does. The Rotax 582 has a TBO
of about 250 hours in the Mini-500. The Hirth 2706 has a TBO of about 2000
hours in the Ultrasport 331 (probably). Both engines are two strokes rated
at 65 HP. The main difference is anodized aluminum cylinder walls on the
Hirth and a lower operating RPM.
I don't know how many engines I've worked on in my life. I'm working on my
Cat D7 bullldozer (steel sleeves) today, but I've got my little Mustang 441
skid steer apart too. Don't ask a guy that lives on any acreage at all if
he works on engines, that's about all we ever get to do. You'll find out
when you get that 40 acres.
If you want to just change to lightweight pistons without modifying the
crankshaft be my guest. That's entirely up to you. Maybe I just don't
understand what you were trying to say.
Colors? Cripes, do you have a bone to pick with me too? Spill it. I don't
speak sarcastic very well. I know I'm a big clumsy oaf and I step on toes
without meaning to. I don't know how I did it, but I obviously stepped on
your toes somehow.
