Komatsu Construction Equipment
QUESTION:Haven't run into Rob McClearly yet. Komatsu has a bunch of people in
Chicago and Atlanta for the most part that do not have much contact with
distributor personnel. May get to see him someday.
Jeff, you probably remember the Dresser machines. Dresser still exists, and
you can buy a new dozer exactly like them except they are called Dressta
effective last year. The Dozers (TD Series) are no longer made here, they
are built in Poland. Have been for some time. Heritage definitely goes
back to the IH days. Komatsu, which used to be called Komatsu Dresser in
the States, dropped Dresser from the name. Komatsu has not done anything in
trenching yet. Market is dominated by Ditch Witch and Vermeer.
ANSWER: Interesting. My uncle was selling construction equipment for years and
years. He sold Komatsu when he worked for Coneco Equipement in the early
seventies. Before that, he worked for Costello Equipment (long
gone). Allis-Chalmers was main line for them, but they also carried
Link-Belt, CedarRapids, and Bucyrus
Blade, among others I just can't think of right now. He was a travelling
salesman for these companies and
I would often go along for the ride with him in the summer months and very
often would hit many construction
sites with this heavy equipment. I am glad I had the opportunity to see
this heavy equipment in operation up
close such as cone crushers, conveyors, and paving machines, at sites where
these specialized machines were used. I don't believe that the opportunity
comes up for many anymore with liability headaches, etc.; but I think anyone
who is mechanically minded should have the chance to see these heavy
machines in operation up close for themsevles. It was a learning experience
back in the late sixties for me.
