QUESTION:Greece, NY town officials voted against buying a used Japanese dirt mover,
only to learn that it was made in the US and the John Deere that was
consdered to be an "American" competitor was made in Japan. The Komatsu
excavator was $15'000 less than the John Deere. The Deere excavator
engines are made in Iowa, but the machines are made in Japan.
Now they've been /s a final decision because of the confusion and have
been renting the "Japanese" excavator for $4'000/month.
The rented machine was used to clear out a creek Thursday night and keep it
from flooding a home. As the Supervisor said, "He was a thankful guy...
he didn't care if it was American or Japanese." .
ANSWER: I saw this one too. As I recall, Komatsu is a Japanese-American
machine built in Illinois, and 95% of its components are also
American-built.
