QUESTION:after several attempts to fix this, im about to give up. ive got a
30y/o backhoe (jd400) that has a couple broken areas on the main arm.
i also have an old, but very good, miller 300 tig. in addition, ive
got a $200 stick welder. what combonation of the above listed pieces
of equipment and additional purchased parts will result in a weld that
wont pop when im trying to dig a ditch? btw, a new arm for the
backhoe is not an acceptable answer, nor is using the welding
equipment to burn a ditch into the ground - my leads arent long
enough!
ANSWER: First off, what is a 'main arm'? The dipperstick? Are you sure that it's
cast iron and not steel?
Assuming it is, indeed, cast iron, stick weld it using the TIG machine,
because you need DCRP to do it properly. Get some Stoody 55 or equivalent -
you need Ni-rod, regular welding electrodes will NOT work.
