QUESTION:I'm used to crappy manuals. I've even had to use Haynes manuals, so I
know just how miserably incomplete and misleading a manual can be. However,
when I drop BIG MONEY on the OFFICIAL service manual for a piece of
equipment, I expect it to be pretty damned accurate.
Here I am with the Official, latest and greatest edition of the service
manual for my loader/backhoe, and it doesn't even have the correct procedure
for doing the basic tractor adjustments, like turning brakes etc.
Completely wrong.
ANSWER: When I bought my 1976 Ford 2600 used, it came with no manual at all.
I got a catalog from the Ford Tractor dealer that shows that the sell
the service manual for about every thing they have ever sold. So I
bought one. Frankly, its a great manual. It is easy to use, has had
detailed and accurate instructions on how to trouble shoot and service
everything I have looked up in it.
The service manuals for my Dodge Cummins powered PU trucks is also
excellent near as I can tell, but not up to the Ford manuals (truck or
tractor) when it comes to trouble shooting flow charts. I can get a
nice manual from Cummins for either of the engines, but haven't really
needed one yet.
I only have the owners manual for my little JD 770 (really a yanmar
tractor painted green). The service manual is really expensive so I
have not bought it yet - hopefully I won't need it.
My little IHI excavator came with a very comprehensive owners manual -
and surprisingly with a complete exploded view parts list also. I'd
like to have the service manual for it also but haven't been able to
figure out where to buy one from - maybe there isn't one.
