QUESTION:I want to build a backhoe out of junk car parts, sheet steel, and a
Northern Hydraulics Catalog. Any suggestions ? Anybody done this before ? Any plans available on the WWW ?
ANSWER: I haven't built a backhoe, but I built a rotary well driller that is
hydrolic. I got the steel in the junk yard and the hydrolics and valves
from Northern. Go for it - you can do it and the best part of building it
is that you know how to fix it when it breaks down. Get a simple book on
basic hydrolic systems to start with.
Someone already mentioned www.cadplans.com as a source for plans. You can see pictures of a CADdigger being built at http://www.gate.net/~lsikes/cad.html. Also, while Northern is a good source for new hydraulic components, an excellent source for used/rebuilt components that may be more appropriate for your project is Surplus Center in Lincoln, NE. Call them at (800) 488-3407 and get their catalog.
