Historical Construction Equipment
QUESTION:does anybody know who invented the hydraulic shovel or know a good
site where I can learn about how they work?
ANSWER: There's a claim at
http://woodsonline.com/ourstory/wainroy_hist.html
from the people who invented the first all hydraulic backhoe in 1947. Hydraulic construction equipment goes back further
than that, but most earlier excavators were cable-driven.
That's a classic story; the cable-driven excavator companies
didn't want to go after the low end of the market, and the
startups using hydraulics ended up owning the low end, and
then took over the high end. Outside of an open-pit mine,
a cable-driven excavator is rare today.
