QUESTION:Have been thinking about getting an aux. generator for the
homestead, as outages are common and last for hours at a time. Also, there's
this little bump in the road that we *might* endure around News Years ;-).
I've also wanted to get a tig welder for years, but we have a real problem
with not enough power out here (would have to disconnect the stove to have
60 amps to run even a small welder...).
ANSWER: You might consider just buying a genset that is big enough to
power your current welder. take a look in the Heavy Equipment Trader
or Rocks and Dirt for gensets. I've got the same problem around here
even though I am only 4 miles out of town. My problem is that I need
considerably more power than you do. I have to be able to do a
complete cutover to the genset at any possible load for the house, so
that means a 60Kw set for me. I see 20 Kw and smaller sets in HET all
the time, most for less than about 3k, some with load check and
garrantees, some as is.
