Heavy Equipment Technician

QUESTION:

How the hell can the country stand that? Down here in Texas, the unemployment is so low, they are thinking of giving early release to about 5000 non-violent offenders to work on the oilfields or offshore rigs. Those jobs pay $ 20000 US/yr to start and up to $ 80000 US/yr with experience and they can't find enough workers! I'm surprised people in Canada tolerate that kind of unemployment....other countries would have had a revolution by now.

ANSWER:

I wonder about the unemployment rate; Ever since I've been in the working world, I have never been unemployed longer than two weeks in my life. At present, I am self-employed, and making a considerable amount more than when I was working for the big companies (I'm an internet geek-type). Even before got into computers as a career, I found jobs in retail, heavy equipment, etc.

I just don't get where this 9% (12%?) figure comes from. When I was in college
(for heavy equipment technician) one of the first things they told us was that just because a company doesn't have a "Help Wanted" sign on their door, it doesn't mean they aren't hiring.

I knew that before college! I've had the oppurtunities of working for some really decent companies, just by "knocking on their door". So why is it that this supposed unemployment rate is so high?

The only thing I can think of (And I've seen it often enough) is the pride factor. I've known a few people who have been unemplyed for longer than three years. This was not due to the fact that there weren't offers for them, it's just that they had a certain income level in mind and wouldn't "stoop" below that no matter what. I'd rather be flipping burgers than be unemployed! At least the mind-numbing minimum wage jobs give you a bit of income to either get you by (or in my case) give you the little bit of extra cash to improve your education, skills, etc.
