QUESTION:The one recent episode where they were in contact with a planet on the
technological level of early twentieth century earth had a good back
story, however, the plot went nowhere. Also the same 4 or 5 people are always
in the story, ala Star Trek. Of course in Star Trek we had the crew of a
spaceship, which limited the cast somewhat. However, in SG1 there
should not be that limitation. I also have difficulty accepting that the whole
operation is in the charge of a single two star general. He should
have a much larger staff and there should be more than one expeditionary
crew. Also how come every one is limited to hand weapons? Surly those
stargates are big enough to get motorized vehicles and some heavy weapons
through.
ANSWER: You in general don't want to introduce modern military equipment in a TV
series. It is just too nasty. If you think of heavy equipment moving
through the chokepoint of the stargate, it would be just to easy for the
enemy to install automatic weapons that shred your tanks. By employing
only light equipment, you can get away with the argument that this will
remain below the overall sensitivity level of the automatic defense
systems.
