Heavy Equipment Maintenance

QUESTION:

What rod would be recommended for heavy equipment maintenance such as bucket welding on my excavator and backhoe, I've got some 7018 and 6011 in the shop, although I'm a very accomplished welder, I've never had any schooling on it.

I've got a portable Hobart welder that will do 225 amps DC-, DC+ and AC.

ANSWER:

I had once done a lot of repair welding for a large excavating contractor in my area. I would say have yourself an array of E7018 electrode sizes i.e, 3/32 through 3/16". We did all repair welding and also replaced bucket teeth, using " L0=HY" and there were no problems or failures. This contractor has done this for over 40 years. Don't be fooled by all the "specialty maintenance rods" out there, for they are "LO-HY" or stainless rods disguised in a $20 per pound jacket! Use the E-6011 [or any E-60XX rods for your fabs of mild steel up to 3/8". When you get up to and over 3/8" thick, Use the E-7018, which has the impact/abrasion/strength needed for heavy service.
