Heavy Equipment Industry

QUESTION:

I spent a half hour talking to a guy who was looking through the employment adds in the local daily dead fish guts wrapper. I ask him what kind of a job he was for.

It turns out that he was a heavy equipment operator and the influx of illegal has impacted that field. A lot of the heavy equipment operators in Oregon are illegal mexicans who will drive Cats, back hoes, loaders, etc at about half of what a US citizen will take.. That's 10 to 12 bucks an hour verses 22-25 an hour.

Also this business of Mexican trucks on the United States roads is not a good Idea. It seems that the long haul truck companies are planning on replacing there U.S citizen drivers with Mexican drivers who will cost about 1/3 as much.

Folks NAFA and WTO is going to kill us. Tell me that a truck driven by a mexican who can neither read or write english is safer than a truck driven by somebody that know what the word stop means.

ANSWER:

That is something that I just cannot figure out. I have applied numerous times for this type of work. Always would have gladly taken $8 - $10 an hour to set in a cab and drive a machine instead of taking the same pay for being out in all types of weather busting my ass as labor. Not one time have I gotten that job.

How is it that illegal Mexicans are getting them?

There is a chicken plant in Sylome Springs, AR that I once worked at that would not ever pay more then $6 an hour, no matter how hard you worked. Now they are paying Mexicans $10 an hour and there production has not increased by even one bird over when I worked there.

I just do not get it. It almost looks like they are getting some sort of kick back for hiring them.
