Heavy Duty Construction Equipment
QUESTION:I think I found the perfect light weight toad.
http://www.vw-store.com/Citation.htm a Dune buggy whatta ya think?
I think once I put the v-6 in the LeSharo it will pull it and it's the
lightest thing I can think of.
My buddy wont give up his Crosley.
ANSWER: I'm not sure where you came up with this. I have never
proposed towing outside the tow ratings. I do recognize
trucks have improved over the years and have said as much.
You, on the other hand, don't acknowledge that. That's fine,
it only means your opinion winds up being tainted by prejudice.
My friend, the one who had a '97 1500 Sliverdesperado and
killed three (or more, I lost count) transmissions and rear
ends, finally bought a 2500HD model. He now is having
strange sounds out of his transmission, bad enough he feels
it may be going. This is the heavy duty automatic, not the
Allison, and is rated to handle his 6,000 lb trailer with
ease. He had no stability problems with his former truck and
was not an experienced rv'r when he bought the trailer. His
former truck was rated to tow his trailer but his problems
came from his driving style. So having a heavier duty tow
vehicle doesn't prevent having problems towing.
The new truck we bought is a far more capable performer than
The GMC we had and is more than capable towing our current
trailer. The engine and transmission are the same as used
for the 2500 version. The wheelbase is the same as the 2500
version. The cooling system is the same as the 2500 system.
We've towed with this truck enough to know it is a safe rig
on the road. Having bought this Dodge, I would never go back
to the GMC, not that I didn't like mine, it just wasn't
designed as well for towing.
But all that is beside the point. The discussion was about
towing a toad behind a motorhome. My point was not about
unsafe practices, it was about reality. Construction
equipment is regularly hauled by F600 type vehicles. These
chassis are designed to haul trailers. The motorhomes we're
discussing here are not the mini versions with 350/3500
chassis, they are based on the heavier truck chassis (medium
duty). As such they will pull a toad if properly equipped.
That was my point. If you choose to make it a personal
issue, so be it.
In our last go around, I threw a nasty at you. I apologize
for that, it isn't my usual self. I value your advice as do
many who drop in here. You shouldn't get your undies in a
bunch if another reasonable view is presented. Denigrating
the presenter by words serves no purpose other than turning
the reader off. I'm as guilty of that as you and need to
work on it.
These two websites are unique in that the folks who come
here have many varied interests plus share the love of
rv'ing. I enjoy reading most who post, I only cut those who
are really trolls. So, I look forward to your future
postings and wish you well.
