Scott Richter on the Daily Show

QUESTION:

I have a copy of a wonderful German forklift safety video on CDROM. It starts off mildly enough, but ends up with scenes much as you describe. It is much too big (91MB) for me to e-mail. If anyone can offer an appropriate hosting site, I can burn a CD for you.

ANSWER:

My condolances. However, the purpose of these safety videos is to prevent such horrible things from happening. The difficulty is getting certain employees to watch, *remember*, and *apply* the lessons that are presented. By using a mix of humor and gore, they cause people to remember the lesson. Then, hopefully, the employee will connect what they are about to do with the equipment with the possibility of a horrible outcome.

First time I sat on a forklift in Oregon at my former employer, it was one of those high-lift models to pull pallets off a 3-high rack. I was in a slow-moving inventory warehouse, really, really needing a rare spare part on one of the high racks. And the keys were in the thing. And nobody was around. So by trial and error, I first poked the lift mechanism through the roof, then got the pallet, then the spare part, then put the pallet back, then wiped fingerprints, then ran like hell.
