Forklift Tire

QUESTION:

How do theyput the forklift tire on the wheel, when it is a solid rubber tire with no tube.?

ANSWER:

I used to do this when I was in college. Most solid tire forklift rims have a removable lock ring on one side. The lock ring is made out of very strong steel and it snaps under a retaining lip on the rim. The rims have sharp pieces of metal welded to them every so often around the part of the rim that is inside the tire. The rim, minus the lock ring, is put in a hydraulic press. The tire is put on top of the rim and a cage is set on top of the tire. The press pushes on the cage which forces the solid tire down onto the rim. The sharp pieces of metal on the rim dig into the tire and keep it from spinning on the rim. The press exerts enough force on the tire that it actually pushes it on the rim too far. At this point you put the lock ring in through the side of the cage and snap it under the retaining lip on the rim then you slowly release the pressure on the press and the solid tire will push against the lock ring which keeps it on the rim. Sometimes if the lock ring is not on good, it will fly of and can cause severe injury. That is why you use the cage. If the lock ring flies off, it will just rattle around inside the cage. I have seen lock rings fly off and ruin a cage, but that is better than injuring or killing someone.
