QUESTION:How many of you have looked out the window on a flight and saw mechanics
working on the plane? This question came about from a story a friend told
me. He's a 10000hr + airline pilot/engineer. He says one time a fan blade
on a Rolls Royce RB-211 turbo fan angine on an MD-11 developed a chip. it
was well within limits and he went out with a pneumatic die grinder to dress
out the chip. He goes on to say that the looks on the peoples faces in the
windows were priceless as he sends 4 ft sparks off the fan blade.
ANSWER: I was on an Air New Zealand flight from Sydney to L. A. which had a stop
in Auckland. After taking off one of the inboard engines blew up (747)
and after we landed in Auckland a forklift was driven over to it and we
watched them pull what looked like insulation out of it. That was all
that was left inside it. After awhile they took us off the plane and
told us that we would be stuck there awhile since there were no spare
planes to continue our journey on. Anyway, they kept Auckland airport
open all night for us. Free food in the cafeteria until it ran out.
Arrived in Tahiti half a day late on the same plane. After deplaning
in Tahiti saw them dumping Mobil-1 in the rebuilt/replaced engine.
If you travel enough you will see alot more than you have ever imagined.
