Wear of bucket excavator teeth

QUESTION:

Is anyone aware of research into the wear of bucket teeth for hydraulic excavators or backhoe's.

I am particularly interested in research into the way in which the original dimensions when new change with time.

If anyone has a reference or any information that may be of use I would greatly appreciate your help.

ANSWER:

In the excavator buckets the teeth used varies depending on the applications. Also the teeth material could be a forging or a casting. Yet again as castings a number of alloys are used. We find quite often that the end teeth also known as cutters wear out faster than the centre ones. Also if the bucket is used only as a shovel, the wear is lesser. It is interesting to study the wear patterns, but it could only be done in the mines or fields ,lab simulation and studies will not be a true reflection of the end usage due to the various parameters involved. Operator's skills also plays a role all factors remaining same. Good Luck in your studies on wear patterns for this application(indeed a down to earth one but no means an easy one.)
