QUESTION:I am considering a new direction in modeling and have been looking for
kits of construction equipment. They seem to be very few and far
between, with most models of construction equipment being preassembled
diecast (toys or otherwise). I have no particular bias against diecast,
but I want to assemble the kits myself instead of purchasing completed
models. Could someone please provide information about
manufacturers/sources for kits, plastic, multimedia and/or diecast?
ANSWER: AMT made a small number of kits that could be considered construction
equipment in their line of 1/25 scale big rig kits in the sixties and
seventies. There are a handful of dump trucks including an excellent
version of an International 350 Construction Truck (a big off road
dump truck). They also made some Cement Mixer kits. Finally they also
had a Caterpillar Bulldozer kit. All of these are currently out of
production but can be found on e-bay if you're willing to spend some
money. AMT just recently re-released their John Deere backhoe kit and
it can still be found in many hobby shops. If you want anything else
I know that some of the company's make other construction equipment in
some of the railroad scales but can't provide any more info about them
than that.
