QUESTION:I would like to dig a pond and was wondering if a front end loader would do
the job. I've heard that they don't dig very good on the small tractors.
I'm looking into backhoes but would still need a tractor for bush hogging,
etc. I thought I might be better off ($$$) getting a tractor that can dig
and bush hog instead of a backhoe and small tractor. What size of tractor
would it take to dig a pond with a front end loader? How would a JD 4020
with front end loader dig compared to a Case 580 backhoe using the front
loader?
ANSWER: Loaders on farm tractors are usually not beefy enough
for serious digging. It's easy to bend things if you are
not extremely careful. Loaders on backhoe tractors are
generally stronger, as they are expected to do at least
some digging and backfilling. But for a pond, you will
be moving a lot of tough, compacted soil, maybe clay,
rocks, etc., and should probably think excavator or 'dozer.
I'd say buy the optimum tractor for your daily work and
rent what you need for the one-time pond job.
