QUESTION:I bought some teeth for the bucket of my backhoe some time ago, and I
believe the salesman said they were cast iron. Is this possible? Wouldn't
cast iron be too brittle?
ANSWER: I think you'll find the "cast" type backhoe teeth are actually cast
alloy steel usually with lots of manganese for wear resistance. These
teeth are for the most severe digging such as blasted rock.
I used to use the fabricated teeth (plate tooth welded to a stamped
socket) with good success. They were cheaper than the cast type and
are easy to rebuild by welding some more plate on the tooth with some
hard facing applied. Probably cheaper to replace the teeth than
rebuild them if you have to pay someone to do it for you though.
